While waiting for the train I was “befriended” by a thai heroin junkie named Dang who despite speaking almost no english managed to carry on a conservation with me using a combination of hand signals and my LP (Lonely Planet) guidebook. He looked and smelled like he hadn’t showered in a few weeks, blinked nonstop (which he attributed to the heroin), and petted my knee from time to time which put me on high alert for a possible pickpocket attempt which never happened. He told me he was traveling to see his baby in the south and showed me his ticket for a train that didn’t leave until the next day. Turned out to be a nice guy, although I had to get away due to the smell. I gave him a Clif Bar (which he sniffed and wolfed down) and a knuckle bump and scooted up the track aways. The train ride to Ayutthaya was packed as Thais were leaving en masse for the three day weekend due to it being the King’s Birthday the next day. I managed to get on, get my packs stowed and take a seat when I was approached by a woman who showed me her ticket.
